In a cold stone basement in rural Southeast Minnesota, I create jewelry from homegrown and dried gourds. I was fascinated growing gourds in my backyard garden and found that once dried they take color beautifully while having their own intriguing mottled texture. They are also incredibly light and I was able to create larger pieces, particularly earrings that were featherlight and a joy to wear. I pride my work on being sustainable and handmade from the ground up. I really hope you love this jewelry as much as I do,
- Rach Pauli.
I am dedicated to the production of beautiful, but also sustainable, jewelry. I am always dismayed when I see lovely, vibrant jewelry created from petroleum based compounds. I knew there must be a better way to create light, comfortable and gorgeous jewelry from a more sustainable source. My goal has been to take the farm-to-table model and apply it to jewelry. Therefore, all of my gourds I grow myself using all natural techniques. I source all of my hardware from domestic sources and all waste from my process goes directly into my compost (and then back into the garden!). My approach to crafting fine art jewelry truly embodies the spirit of sustainability in practice.
